Whiskey

Tradition says that the Scotti brought whiskey-making to Scotland from Ireland in the 5th Century. Judging by the fact that there are now over 140 different whiskey distilleries in the country, this had to be one of the most successful “invasions” that Scotland has experienced.

Distillery visits are now thought by many to be an essential part of any golfing holiday in the Highlands and Islands. You can learn about the surprising variety of single malt whiskeys, the processes by which they are made, the differences between the single malts and the blends and the qualities that make each whiskey unique.

Many distilleries have beautifully decorated visitor centers equipped with gift shops and tasting rooms. Some also have tea rooms, restaurants, museums and even film theatres. All are staffed with friendly and informative greeters and guides eager to explain why their distillery’s whiskey is just a bit better than their competitor’s in the next glen over. They will invite you to sample a dram of their product – or perhaps two or three – and then to buy if you wish.
