Planning Your Golf Vacation in Scotland

Hub Strategy for Your Scotland Golf Trip
You need to have a basic strategy to guide your planning for your Scotland golf trip and I suggest that the use of a Hub Strategy. I highly recommend that the Independent Golfer pick a hub of operations from which travel to the desired golf courses is easy. The alternative, staying a different place every night or two brings with it too much packing and unpacking, map reading and searching, and time on the road instead of the course.

If the Scotland golf trip is short, 5 - 7 days, one hub is sufficient. If you are lucky enough to be staying longer, then two hubs might work, staying in one area for the first half of your trip and another for the second.

You can look at golf courses and convenient accommodations located around each of seven individual hubs by clicking on the map below:

Select Your Hub(s) Well for Your Scotland Golf Vacation
If you opt for this Hub Strategy, selecting an advantageous hub is all-important. Two friends of mine on a week of Scotland golf were able to take advantage of an acquaintance’s apartment outside of Glasgow as their hub. Their plan was to stay there at no expense and drive a rental car each day to a different course that they wanted to play. They knew Scotland to be a small country (at 30,414 square miles, it is smaller than South Carolina) and thought the driving would be tolerable. They were wrong. Their abiding memories of that trip are not the Scotland golf courses they played but the highways they drove, the traffic cones they encountered that marked off road construction work, and the traffic jams they worked through trying to get to the golf courses they wanted to play.

Their difficulty was that Glasgow is a poorly situated hub from which to play golf. The courses that they wanted to play were all at a considerable distance from their apartment. Most required them to drive through the city in morning rush-hour traffic on motorways clogged with commuting Glaswegians whom they met again in the evening as they returned. After their trip was over they admitted that the free rent they enjoyed while using their friend’s apartment was not worth the time and aggravation that came from the driving they had to do. They would have had a much more enjoyable time if they had found a hub that was centered among a cluster of golf courses that they wanted to play.
