The city of Inverness offers a wide variety of hotels, bed and breakfasts and self-catering apartments that are well maintained and reasonably priced. Though it is considered “The Capital” of the highlands, Inverness is a small city with only about 65,000 inhabitants. It was recently ranked 5th among 189 British cities and towns for its quality of life.

The city is centered around its medieval castle where legend has it that Mac Beth, of Shakespeare notoriety, built his stronghold. The city has a delightful winding of old streets through its shopping center that has been blocked off from motor traffic to allow leisurely pedestrian access. Of course, it sports a typically Scottish selection of pubs, clubs and other evening entertainments. It is situated at the mouth of the Caledonian Canal that connects Loch Ness and the Great Glen with the Moray Firth and the North Sea and thus offers scenic, canal-side walks with views of a diverse range of wildlife, gardens and beautiful vistas of mountains and sea.
