Just as in the United States, the cost of Scotland golf varies. Scotland golf courses typically offer different tariffs (green fee costs) for weekdays and weekends. Many also offer a price for a single round and a “day ticket” for those of us who just don’t want to stop play after 18 holes. Finally, many of the bigger Scotland golf courses vary their tariffs with the season of the year. All prices in the following discussion are based on single round, weekday, high season rates.
Some Costs of Scotland Golf
Keeping these factors constant, there is still a great variation in tariffs from course to course. Though the quality of golf offered by a course is one factor in this variation, more important seems to be the fame of the course, especially in American eyes. Not averse to making money from tourists, managers on the more famous Scotland golf courses have relentlessly raised their tariffs to a point where they are, quite frankly, outrageous.
A round on The Old Course at St. Andrews now costs £120.00. Gleneagles charges £115. Royal Troon requires you to play two rounds, only one of which is on their championship course, and charges £210.00
More Reasonable Green Fees
By contrast, tariffs for Scotland's less-traveled "world-class" and "hidden gem" golf courses are much more reasonable. This wouldn't be important if it weren't for the fact that many of these courses offer as good a golf experience as their more famous sisters. |
